MERCED, Calif. – Pin hitters Layla Hernandez, Sophia Palmeri, Gilly Glikman and Hailey Sutton earned all-tournament honors, with Hernandez adding MVP distinction, as St. Francis swept four teams from the San Joaquin Valley to capture the Central California Classic girls' volleyball tournament at Merced and Golden Valley high schools Saturday.
Meanwhile, up in Folsom, the Troubadour frosh team enjoyed the same feat: four straight matches in straight sets to snare the Bulldog Bash tournament title.
Varsity opened Saturday's Day 2 action with a 25-19, 25-16 sweep of Downey followed by a 25-12, 25-16 win over Chowchilla at the Merced site. The Troubies then relocated to Golden Valley to dispatch the host Cougars, 25-12, 25-16, only to take down Pitman in the championship match by an eerily similar final of 25-16, 25-12. They remain undefeated at 13-0 for the year.
Hernandez posted 35 kills against just 11 errors for a .348 average in 16 total sets for the weekend. Glikman turned in another 38 kills to go with 14 total blocks. Sutton saw far more action in Saturday's portion of the tourney, totaling 23 kills on Day 2. She hit 7-1-15 with six digs against the Knights in Saturday's early match, then followed with a six-kill, eight-dig showing shortly after against the Tribe.
Sophia Palmeri saved her best for last, tying her season high of 11 kills – in only two sets – on 15 attempts in the championship match against the Pride.
The St. Francis freshman team also swept through every opponent en route to the Bulldog Bash crown. The Troubies prevailed, 25-11, 25-19 against Placer; and 25-7, 28-26 against Vacaville to complete pool play. That followed with a 25-10, 25-10 victory against Roseville to start bracket play, followed by a 25-20, 25-20 triumph against St. Mary's for the tourney championship.
The froshies actually faced a deficit as late as 21-17 in the second set against Vacaville, putting in jeopardy the team's undefeated set streak. Instead, the youngest Troubies are now 9-0 for the season with nine straight-set wins.
All three St. Francis squads begin Sierra Foothill League with a home tripleheader against Rocklin on Monday. Frosh starts at 4:30, with JV scheduled for 5:30 and varsity at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available via GoFan.
