Records fall in SFL-Delta LAX opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Juniors Brynley Hodge and Jane Tattersall each netted five goals with an assist, freshman Keira Miles added another four goals, and sophomore Karly Okamoto tallied three assists, leading St. Francis to a 20-4 win over Del Oro in the first round of the SFL/Delta League girls' lacrosse playoff at Rio Americano High School Tuesday evening.

In helping the Troubadours improve to 11-4 overall, Hodge, Tattersall and Okamoto each broke key school single-season records.

Hodge's scoring total raises her season sum to 63 goals, making her the first player in program history to surpass the 60-goal barrier in a season. The previous St. Francis record of 58 was set last year by Zahra Smith, now a freshman at Delaware State. With the three dimes, Okamoto raised her season total to 49, breaking her own record of 48 from her freshman season.

Tattersall also broke a school season record in Tuesday's game. She now has 55 goals and 25 assists on the year for a 80 total points, unseating Katie Ku (2008) for the school record. Meanwhile, the 55 goals puts Tattersall into a tie for third in SF history with Ku (2008) and Hayley Kusserow (2014). Furthermore, the 25 assists lists her fourth in Troubie annals behind Okamoto's first two seasons and Sophia Gorona's 29 in 2019.

In addition to the new benchmarks, Miles now has 33 goals for the year, the third-most by a Troubie freshman behind just Kusserow (38 in 2012) and Gorona (37 in 2018). Like Zahra Smith, Kusserow (Saint Mary's) and Gorona (UC Davis) each went on to play Division I lacrosse.

Hodge led the way in Tuesday's win with seven draw controls, while Elizabeth Barger and Zia Smith won three each. Sophomore Cami Zucker totaled two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Zia Smith and Tattersall each scored two goals in the first five minutes to craft a 4-0 lead for SF. Hodge hit an eight-meter then scored on an assist from Okamoto while Tattersall completed her hat trick within a span of 64 seconds to extend that lead to 7-0. Hodge and Tattersall each had four goals by halftime, helping the Troubies to a 13-2 edge at the break.

Miles completed her hat trick on a trip to the eight-meter arc to start the second half. Okamoto hit back-to-back to extend the lead to 16-2. Barger scored her two goals in the 39th and 43rd minutes, making it 19-2. Miles scored the 20th with five minutes left in the game, marking the first time SF has netted 20 goals since a 20-2 victory over Christian Brothers back on April 5, 2019.

The SFL-Delta tourney is a joint series between the two Sacramento-area leagues sponsoring girls' lacrosse. As the third-place team in the Delta League, St. Francis is grouped with Del Oro, Folsom and Rio. The four teams now relocate to Folsom for the overall fourth- and third-place games on Thursday: Rio against Del Oro at 5:30, followed by St. Francis against the host Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
