EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – Senior Colleen Medina posted two pass breakups and an interception while sophomore Piper Bates led the defense with eight total stops, but St. Francis failed to score any offensive points in a 41-2 loss to Oak Ridge in Sierra Foothill League girls' flag football action Tuesday night.
The Troubadours slip to 13-2 for the season and 2-1 in SFL play. The Trojans improve to 7-1 overall and remain unbeaten in league games at 3-0.
Offensively, senior Annie Swanson caught five passes while junior Natalia Zitelli carried the ball 10 times for 50 yards, but the only points for St. Francis came courtesy of an unforced error: a dropped snap in the end zone for a safety.
Medina's interception's with eight minutes left in the fourth set up the Troubies' best scoring opportunity of the game. Sophomore quarterback Lola Fox hit receiver Tayli Paeu-Lindgren over the middle for short yardage, but a penalty tacked another 10 yards onto the play for a red-zone chance. Zitelli ran to within a yard of the end zone, with only Rachel Groth's deflagging preventing a running TD. With fourth-and-goal on the OR 1, Zitelli attempted a center sneak but could not hold on to the handoff. The fumble gave Oak Ridge possession on its own 1-yard line, resulting in the bad snap and the safety.
Until Medina's pick, the Trojans scored 41 unanswered points: 14 in the first quarter, another 14 in the second, then two more touchdowns in the third. Junior Laurel Smart scored two of the six touchdowns and converted two of the five successful one-point conversions.
Tuesday's loss also featured an unusual play: a blocked punt. With 3:27 left in the first quarter, OR reserve receiver Logan Cahill took a position directly in front of center Lauren Herbelin. Punter Holland Sperber drilled a kick straight down the middle, with Cahill timing her jump perfectly for a two-handed swat. This set up a first-and-goal on the SF 20, which the Trojans later turned into their second touchdown.
The 41 points allowed is the most in St. Francis' young history of flag football, surpassing the 36 scored by Granite Bay on October 15, 2024 and St. Mary's in the 2023 Sac-Joaquin Section playoff opener.
The varsity setback followed a masterful 19-6 win for the Troubies junior varsity, which improves to 7-1 for the year and 2-0 in SFL play. Freshman quarterback Chloe Hoertsch ran for a touchdown and Bridget Beard for another, while Julia Tipton scored on a "pick six" interception return with no time left as the clincher.
Tipton's takeaway was one of three for the Troubie defense, along with Elizabeth McNearney and Angie Weston. Oddly, Oak Ridge took the initial lead with a running touchdown midway through the first, with that 6-0 edge holding up through halftime. Then freshman Anna Votaw equalized on a 13-yard run early in the third quarter, igniting what grew into a 19-0 SF run to finish.
St. Francis continues a stretch of consecutive SFL road games, returning to action at Granite Bay on Thursday. Kickoff times are 4:30 for JV, 5:45 p.m. for varsity.
