Aaron Rios is the Head Coach of the St. Francis Cross Country and track & Field programs.
Rios was named the head coach of the St. Francis cross country program for the 2016 season and is entering his fourth full season with the school. He has led the team to program to four consecutive Top-10 finishes at the CIF State Championships, three Sac-Joaquin Section titles and two Delta League titles during his tenure.
He was named the Head Track & Field coach in June 2019. In five seasons coaching the distance group, he has helped the program to four consecutive SJS top-10 finishes highlighted by Division I and Masters titles in 2019. He mentored junior Isabella Fauria to a fourth-place finish at the State Championships and Masters and DI titles on both the 800 and 1600 meters.
An experienced cross-country and track and field athlete and coach, Rios began his coaching career in 2010 as a distance coach at Foothill High School in Sacramento. In 2011, Rios served as Head Coach for the girls cross country team at Del Campo High School and went on to head up the track and field team.
During his time at Del Campo Rios helped qualify individual athletes to state every season.
Coach Rios helped to rejuvenate the girls cross country program at Del Campo and in 2014 his work culminated in the achievement of a section championship title for the girls cross country team - an accomplishment the school had not seen in 23 years.
Overall, Rios will be entering his fifth season with the school. He originally joined the program as an assistant track coach during the 2015 season. He coached the Troubadour cross country team in the fall of 2015 on an interim basis, leading the team to second-place finishes at the Delta League and Sac-Joaquin Section meets. The team was eighth in Division II at the CIF State Championships with sophomore Sydney Vandegrift crossing the line 17th overall with seniors Ariane Arndt and Chase Worthen were 27th and 28th, respectively. Overall, the team posted a combined 73 personal bests over the course of the season.
Rios coached the distance group during the 2016 track season, tutoring senior Ariane Arndt to a record-breaking season that culminated in a school record and third-place finish in the 800 meters at the state meet. Vandegrift finished 12th in the 3200, recording the third-fastest time in school history. In 2016, the cross country team was fourth at the state meet and won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II title. The team repeated the feat in both 2017 and 2018 by winning the section title and posting sixth- and eighth-place finishes, respectively.
His passion for coaching has led him to take on volunteer work as Head Coach of cross country at St. Mary's and to coach privately for his club, the Sacramento Elite. All of his work is dedicated to support and further develop the running culture in Sacramento.
He originally joined the program in 2015 and served as the interim cross country coach for most of the season, leading the team to a top-10 finish at the state meet.
